The Beginning years
Stephen grew up in Charleston, South Carolina (on James Island), as the youngest child of an Irish Catholic family which had total eleven children. Stephen’s father James Colbert was the Vice President for academic affairs at the Medical University of South Carolina whereas his mother, Lorna Colbert, was a house wife.
Colbert’s father died in a plane accident when he was ten, after which his mother shifted the family to Easy Bay Street in Charleston. Here he was a bit isolated and soon grew fond of science fiction and fantasy games. Colbert took part in many school plays at Episcopal Porter - Gaud School. Deafness in right ear, killed his dream to study marine biology, still he pursued college and went to Hampden - Sydney College in Virginia. Later he went to study performance at Northwestern University’s School of Communication.
Career
Colbert finished his graduation in 1968 and did a job at Secon City’s box office, where he even took classes to improvise his acting skills. It was here he met and befriended Amy Seadris and Paul Dinello in whose comedy show Exit 57 he later worked in 1995. The show was nominated for five CableACE Awards, 1995.
Apart from Exit 57, Colbert worked on shows like The Dana Carvey Show (1996), The daily show (1997), Let it Snow (1999), Strangers with Candy (1999), Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (2000), Nobody Knows Anything (2003), Chalkzone (2003), Curb Your Enthusiasm (2004), The Venture Bros.( 2004), The Great New Wonderful (2005), Outlaw Tennis (2005), The Colbert Report (2005), The Love Guru (2008), A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! (2008)
etc.
Short film in which he worked was Shock Asylum (1997) and there were feature films like Bewitched (2005), Strangers with Candy and a self produced film, The 1 Second film (2009).
The Colbert Report

Other then Strangers with Candy and The Daily show, the most significant series of Colbert’s career has been The Colbert Report.
The spin off of the Daily Show has been hosted by Colbert himself where he takes on political TV talk shows in a satirical manner. He hosts it, through the character of his own name, who is a distorted political pundit. But it is believed that the character is also a dimension of his character. The script also reflects his personal thinking and likings.
A book associated with the show named I Am America (And So Can You!), was written mostly by him.
Other vocations
On, 29th April, 2006, Colbert as the featured entertainer for the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, took on the Bush administration and the media, standing just few yards away from the President.
Stephen has also co-authored a satirical novel named Wigfield: The Can Do Town That Just May Not with Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris.
Colbert also ran for the U.S. Presidential campaign, 2008 but soon was out of race as he was running from only one state.

Honors
Stephen Colbert has received three Emmys for writing The Daily Show (2004, 2005, and 2006). In 2008 he got another Emmy for writing the Colbert Report. In 2006, he was nominated in three categories of Emmys. He was also nominated in one category each in the years 2007 and 2008.
He has been nominated for Satellite Awards (2005, 2006), Television Critics Association awards (2006), all for his work on The Colbert Show. He also got a couple of Peabody Awards for The Daily Show. The third Peabody award he won was on 2nd April,2008.
The American Dialect Society, named the word truthiness, which he popularized in The Colbert Report as Word of the Year, 2005 which was also chosen as Word of the Year, 2006 by Merriam- Webster.
Knox College gave Colbert an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree in June 2006.
The Time listed Stephen Colbert amongst the 100 most influential people in 2006. In the same year, Colbert along with Jon Stewart was named by New York Magazine as one of the top dozen influential persons in media. In 2007, Ben & Jerry named a ice cream flavor in his honor.
Virgin America, named one of its air planes Air Colbert in August 2007. Colbert also got the key to the city of Columbia from Mayor Bob Coble on 28th October, 2007.
The Associated Press named Colbert, the Celebrity of the Year, on 20th December, 2007.
On 2nd June, 2008, Colbert delivered the Class Day address to the graduating class at the Princeton University. He also got the Class of 2008 Understandable Vanity Award which included his sketch and a mirror. At the 12th annual Webby Awards, Stephen was named the Person of the Year.
Maxim Online named Colbert 2nd Sexiest TV news Anchor in 2006 and in the same year People termed him as a “Sexy Surprise” thus enlisting him in the Sexiest Man Alive rolls. GQ in its December 2006 issue put him on their list of “Men of the Year.”
Jason Bond, an associate professor at the East Carolina University termed a species of trapdoor spider Aptostichus stephencolberti in honor of Colbert in 2008.
Comedy Central, on 8th September, 2008 declared that Colbert’s DNA would be digitized and delivered to the International Space Station to be further taken in October for Immortality Drive by video game designer Richard Garriott.
